The only trade where what you are really ordering is a sound.

In an instrument, felt is not hidden hardware. You can hear it. A drum beater slightly too soft takes the attack out of the note. A damper slightly too hard leaves a note ringing on when it should have stopped.

So hardness is the whole conversation. The measurements are usually the easy part. Getting the feel right normally takes a sample going back and forth once or twice.
