Wool felt
Pressed wool in the densities and thicknesses the work calls for.
Wool felt is made by compressing wool fibre under heat and moisture until it locks together. There is no weave, so it can be cut in any direction without fraying and holds its shape when compressed.
That is why it seals, wicks oil, damps vibration and polishes without scratching — often all in the same component.
Supplied in a range of densities and thicknesses, cut to your sizes.

Typically used for
Density classes
Soft0.15 – 0.23Padding, packing, dust shields, sound deadening

- Looks like
- Open and loose along the cut edge. You can see the individual fibres, and light gets into the surface.
- Feels like
- Squashes easily between finger and thumb, and springs most of the way back. The softest we supply.
- Comes as
- Sheet or roll. Cuts with a knife or a press without needing a machine.
- Tell us
- Thickness, the sheet size you want, and what it is padding or protecting.
Medium hard0.24 – 0.30Oil wicks, general seals, damping pads

- Looks like
- Tighter than soft. The edge still shows fibre, but it holds a clean straight line when cut.
- Feels like
- Firm, and gives under thumb pressure without collapsing. This is the general-purpose one — if you are unsure, start here.
- Comes as
- Sheet, roll, or cut to your shape. The usual choice for wicks and seals.
- Tell us
- Thickness, and whether it is sealing, holding oil, or absorbing vibration.
Hard0.31 – 0.44Washers, bearing seals, wear strips

- Looks like
- Dense and close. The edge is clean and smooth, more like board than cloth.
- Feels like
- Barely gives under your thumb. Stiff enough to stand a sheet on its edge.
- Comes as
- Sheet, or cut and punched to your drawing. Holds an accurate shape once cut.
- Tell us
- The part it replaces, or a drawing with the sizes on it.
Extra hard0.45 – 0.75Polishing wheels and bobs, high-load seals

- Looks like
- Almost solid to look at. Very little fibre visible at the edge.
- Feels like
- Hard, closer to firm rubber than to cloth. Does not squash by hand.
- Comes as
- Wheels, cones and heads for polishing, or sheet for heavy-duty parts. Can be turned to shape on a lathe.
- Tell us
- For polishing, the wheel diameter and the spindle it fits. Otherwise, the part it replaces.

SAE cross-reference
F-10.32–0.3695%Washers, wicks, polishing blocks

- Looks like
- Hard and pale cream. Almost all wool, so the colour is even.
- Feels like
- Stiff. Barely moves under your thumb.
- Comes as
- Sheet, or cut to shape.
- Tell us
- The part it replaces. This is a common washer and wick grade.
F-30.32–0.3685%Vibration mounts, oil seals

- Looks like
- As hard as F-1 but slightly greyer, because less of it is wool.
- Feels like
- Stiff, with a touch less spring back than the higher wool grades.
- Comes as
- Sheet, or cut to shape.
- Tell us
- What it sits between, and whether it is sealing or absorbing vibration.
F-50.25–0.2795%Dust shields, pads

- Looks like
- Medium hardness, pale and even.
- Feels like
- Gives under the thumb and comes back. A middle-of-the-road felt.
- Comes as
- Sheet or roll.
- Tell us
- Thickness and the size of pad or shield you need.
F-70.25–0.2780%Vibration mountings, wicks

- Looks like
- Medium hardness, greyer than F-5 because more of it is blended fibre.
- Feels like
- Similar give to F-5, slightly less lively.
- Comes as
- Sheet or roll.
- Tell us
- Thickness, and whether it is a mounting or a wick.
F-100.17–0.2080%Dust shields, lighter duty

- Looks like
- Soft and open at the edge, with a grey cast.
- Feels like
- Squashes easily. Light duty.
- Comes as
- Sheet or roll.
- Tell us
- Thickness and finished size.
F-150.17–0.2055%Sound deadening, spacers

- Looks like
- Soft, and clearly mottled — about half of it is not wool.
- Feels like
- Loose and light. Good at absorbing sound rather than load.
- Comes as
- Sheet or roll.
- Tell us
- Thickness and the area you need to cover.
F-260.14–0.1745%Packing, padding, liners

- Looks like
- The softest and greyest here. Under half wool, so the fibre looks mixed.
- Feels like
- Very light and open. Squashes almost flat.
- Comes as
- Roll, usually. The economy grade.
- Tell us
- Width and metres. Say if it is packing or lining.
F-500.32–0.3695%Bearing washers, high wear

- Looks like
- Hard and pale, like F-1. The difference between them is in how they are made up, not in how they look.
- Feels like
- Stiff and dense. Made for wear.
- Comes as
- Sheet, or punched washers.
- Tell us
- The washer sizes — inside diameter, outside diameter, thickness.
F-510.32–0.3692%Ball bearings, oil retainers

- Looks like
- Hard and pale. Very close to F-50 to look at.
- Feels like
- Stiff, and holds oil well.
- Comes as
- Sheet, or punched washers for bearings.
- Tell us
- Washer sizes, and how much oil it has to hold.
F-550.25–0.2780%Anti-squeak strip, acoustic

- Looks like
- Medium hardness, slightly grey.
- Feels like
- Gives easily. Made to sit between two surfaces and stop the noise.
- Comes as
- Strip or roll, often with an adhesive backing.
- Tell us
- Width, thickness, and whether you want it self-adhesive.
